The Witcher Season 3 Writers’ Line-up: New Names and an Unexpected Absence

The much anticipated third season of The Witcher will wrap up filming soon and the director of the final episodes, Bola Ogun is currently recording her episodes in the outskirts of London. The Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan starring Netflix hit recently had a setback when Henry Cavill tested positive for Covid, but he recovered soon to start filming again; hence, the filming is just delayed by a couple of weeks and expected to wrap by mid-September.

While we wait impatiently for news on the filming, let’s look at the writers’ room for Season 3. Some of the names are familiar because they have previously written for The Witcher franchise, while some are new.

The writers list comes from Deadline. At the time of its publication in April we didn’t know that the writers are listed in the order of the episodes they wrote, but later we have learned the credits for the second half of the season, which corroborates the order.

Block 1: Bonding of the main trio, Belleteyn and other things

Episode 1: Mike Ostrowski

Ostrowski is no newcomer to The Witcher universe having written episodes 107 and 207. A veteran writer with more than two decades of television writing experience including The Blacklist and Private Practice, his presence in the writers’ room has been invaluable to the series.

Episode 2: Tania Lotia

Tania Lotia is not a newcomer to The Witcher universe either, having previously worked on The Witcher: Blood Origin. Apart from episode 3 of The Witcher: Blood Origin, Lotia has also worked on DC’s superhero-horror series Swamp Thing, and Amazon Prime’s Carnival Row, starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne.

Block director: Stephen Surjik

Block 2: Separation, Gors Velen, Aretuza

Episode 3: Haily Hall

Haily Hall has played an active part in The Witcher production since Season 1. Apart from writing episodes 106 and 205 of The Witcher, she has also been a constant presence on The Witcher set as a producer.

Episode 4: Rae Benjamin

Rae Benjamin worked on The Witcher Season 2 as the script coordinator and has an impressive resume having worked on hits like Bridgerton and Our Flag Means Death.

Block director: Gandja Monteiro

Block 3: Reunion and Thanedd

Episode 5: Clare Higgins

Clare Higgins has been with The Witcher since Season 1, having worked as the writer’s assistant in both the previous seasons. Higgins also co-wrote episode 203 with showrunner Lauren Hissrich. She has been credited as the lore keeper of the writers’ room.

Episode 6: Javier Grillo-Marxuach

Grillo-Marxuach needs no introduction with more than two decades of television writing experience, which includes Lost, The 100, The Shannara Chronicles, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance among others. His episode will have the major part of the Thanned coup.

Block director: Loni Peristere

Block 4: Post-Thanedd events, Korath and Brokilon

Epsiode 7: Matthew D’Ambrosio

D’Ambrosio too has been on The Witcher team since Season 1, having worked as the script coordinator in the first season and promoted to staff writer in Season 2. He wrote episode 206 that included the very traumatic Roach’s death. Episode 7 will feature Ciri’s adventure in the Korath desert and the Thanned aftermath.

Episode 8: Troy Dangerfield

Troy Dangerfield was the writer’s assistant in The Witcher: Blood Origin and has worked on TV series Castle among others. He wrote the finale of The Witcher Season 3.

Block director: Bola Ogun

Lauren Hissrich not credited?

The Deadline list of the Season 3 writers doesn’t include showrunner Lauren Hissrich, only listing her as showrunner and executive producer, potentially suggesting the possibility of her not writing any of the Season 3 episodes in its entirety.

That would be unexpected but not surprising since she’s producing not only The Witcher series but also the spin-offs and must have a very busy workload considering her recent promotion and overall deal with Netflix to produce more content for the streamer.

That being said, to clear up any confusion, even without writing any one episode, Hissrich is still very involved and is essentially driving the story and overseeing everything. The story outlines and the overall direction is still hers.

Still, it’s very possible Hissrich co-wrote one or two episodes of the new season, just like she co-wrote 203 with Clare Higgins. If that’s the case, our bet would be the Thanedd episode with Grillo-Marxuach and/or the finale with Dangerfield. Simply because those are the most crucial ones and it would makes sense for the showrunner to turn the attention to those.

Season 3 of The Witcher is in production until September 2022 for a 2023 release. The live-action prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin is in post-production after two weeks of reshoots and is currently eyed for a Christmas 2022 release.
